Ranthambore National Park is one of India’s most premier Tiger Reserve, famed for its majestic Royal Bengal tigers and dramatic landscapes. At its heart stands the magnificent Ranthambore Fort, believed to have been built in the 10th century by the Chauhan rulers. Rising dramatically above the forests, the fort became a formidable stronghold and witnessed battles between Rajput kings and powerful rulers, including the armies of the Delhi Sultanate.
Ranthambore’s most famous chapter is linked to Rana Hammir Dev Chauhan, whose resistance against Sultan Alauddin Khalji in the 14th century became a symbol of Rajput courage and defiance. The fort eventually changed hands many times, passing through the control of the Delhi Sultanate, Mewar and later the Mughals.
Today, the ruined fort, ancient temples and stone gateways stand amidst the tiger-filled forests—a remarkable meeting of history, legend and wilderness.
Dominating the forest is the magnificent Ranthambore Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rising dramatically above the ancient landscape. Within the park, the iconic Jogi Mahal stands beside the tranquil Padam Talao, one of Ranthambore’s principal lakes, creating one of India’s most evocative wildlife settings. The forest’s other important water bodies—Raj Bagh Talao and Malik Talao—draw an extraordinary variety of wildlife and birds, while the elegant Raj Bagh ruins and chhatris lend an unmistakable sense of a bygone royal era. Together, these historic monuments, ancient ruins, lakes and dry deciduous forests form the majestic backdrop against which Ranthambore’s tigers are so often photographed.
