A visit to Turkey will never be complete without a visit to Greece and the Greek islands
Greece is a sunny Mediterranean promise. Greece is often referred to as the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, the capital of Greece, retains landmarks dating back to the 5th-century B.C. The Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple is one of the oldest architectural marvels from the bygone era… Greece is also known for the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos .The Balkan country of Greece is situated in south eastern Europe has thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. The Greek Gods and Greek Mythology were a part of ancient Greek culture and folklore. Greek mythology explained many things to the ancient Greeks, including religious rituals, the weather, and the meaning of the world. The stories also influenced the art and architecture of the land. Stories of adventures, voyages, bravery, love, promises and war shaped the society of the Greeks giving rise to stories like that of Troy and groomed a clan of warriors like the Spartans.
Turkey has a long and fascinating past and was home to many great civilisations that all left their mark on the landscape. The remains of ancient sites perched on cliff sides are very common when one travels around the country. Perhaps the most famous ancient site in Turkey is Ephesus, near Izmir. This incredible ancient city is where St. Paul first preached to the Ephesians and St. John may have written his gospel. It’s a short transfer from the coast, and a visit at sunset can be marvellous. The Library of Celsus, the Temple of Hadrian, and the Temple of Artemis, are considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Other sites worth visiting are KNIDOS near Datca, memorable not only because of the ancient ruins but also because of its twin harbours, the impressive Kings Tombs of Kaunos near Dalyan, and the Temple of Apollo in Side, where legend suggests that Anthony first met Queen Cleopatra. The city of Troy is a must visit for those interested. The hotspots of Turkey – Pamukkale and Cappadocia are destinations which truly are amazing. The Turkish people are well known for their hospitality, and most locals are extremely welcoming and happy to meet tourists. Expect smiles, handshakes, or maybe even an invitation to drink “cay” (tea) while browsing in shops – it’s all part of the local culture and Turkish charm.
Greece and Turkey have always been enemies as far as history can remember. Even today they do not share cordial relations. However peace prevails. Tourism binds both the countries and both benefit from foreigners travelling to the region. Regardless of their similarities and differences both the countries complement each other. A visit to Turkey will never be complete without a visit to Greece and the Greek islands .Looking across the azure blue expanse from a Greek isle one finds a deep interest and call from within to cross the Bosporus and finally reach Turkey.
